The thicksey monastery in ladakh

Ladakh is famous for its monasteries. Its here that you witness the true ladakhi culture. One of the most prominent monastery is the thicksey monastery. It is the biggest monasteries in ladakh and is located 18 kms from leh. The monestary was formed some 600 years ago. The monestary got its name from an incident whereina a crow placed a cake in perfect order in the very monastery. The term thicksey means “perfect” and so it was named Thicksey Monastery. One of the biggest attractions of this monastery is the statue of Buddha which was founded by the holy dalai lama in the ninteen eighties. The statue is 40 feets tall in height and covers almost two out of twelve floors of the famous monastery. It is the handwork of local ladakhi craftsmen painted in gold color and took around four years to be completed.
